John R. Caruso, M.D., FACS

Dr. John CarusoDr. John Caruso has been in private practice in Maryland since 1996. He completed college at Hampden-Sydney in Virginia and medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. His neurological surgery training was obtained at EVMS and University of New Mexico, under Dr. Ed Benzel, a world leader in biomechanics and spine surgery. Dr. Caruso’s practice focuses on conservative management of spine, minimally invasive and outpatient spine surgery techniques, and complex spine reconstruction.

Dr. Caruso has been the managing partner of Parkway Neuroscience and Spine Institute and is the president of Parkway Surgery Center. His vision and leadership has lead Parkway to grow into an integrated spine care delivery practice and he is presently transitioning the practice into a broader, neuromuscular care center anticipating the changes and challenges of medicine today.

He has championed both trauma care delivery and tort reform through lobbying and legislative efforts in Maryland, keeping its 9 trauma centers open. He cofounded “Save Our Doctors; Protect Our Patients” to work strategies for open access to medical care in Maryland. He has been an officer in the Maryland Neurosurgical Society for 8 years and is now the president; a Maryland State Athletic Commission physician; a spokesman for “Doctors for Medical Liability Reform,” and a strong advocate for physician outpatient spine center development and collaborative actions.

Dr. Caruso has been the Director of Neuro-trauma and Spine at Washington County Hospital. He sits on many boards involving direct and indirect health care delivery and numerous professional societies. He is a board certified neurological surgeon and holds medical licenses in several states and is a staff neurosurgeon at Meritus Medical Center, Frederick Memorial Hospital and Chambersburg Hospital. He speaks nationally on outpatient spine care delivery and has consistently been recognized as one of the “Top 100 Spine Surgeons to Know” in the country through Becker’s Review out of Chicago, and has been recognized as one of the top neurosurgeons in the MD, VA, DC regions.

Dr. Caruso and his wife, Kimberly, have four children.
